13.9 Supramolecular Control of Photochemical and Photophysical Processes: General Principles

چکیده

What do we mean by a “supramolecular control” of a photochemical reaction? To answer this question, we will integrate the fundamental and familiar paradigm of molecular organic photochemistry (e.g., the R + hν → ∗R → I → P sequence) with the paradigm of supramolecular organic chemistry (guest@host chemistry). It will be convenient to consider supramolecular control of unimolecular and bimolecular reactions separately. In both cases, the notion of preorganization of the guest(s) by the host will be a critical factor. For unimolecular reactions:

Emission Spectroscopy as a Probe into Photoinduced Intramolecular Electron Transfer in Polyazine Bridged Ru(II),Rh(III) Supramolecular Complexes

Steady-state and time-resolved emission spectroscopy are valuable tools to probe photochemical processes of metal-ligand, coordination complexes. Ru(II) polyazine light absorbers are efficient light harvesters absorbing in the UV and visible with emissive ³MLCT excited states known to undergo excited state energy and electron transfer. Changes in emission intensity, energy or band-shape, as wel...

Photophysical and photochemical processes in 3D self-assembled gels as confined microenvironments.

Numerous challenging transformations take place in nature with high efficiency within confined and compartmented environments. This has inspired scientists to develop spatially micro- and nanoreactors by 'bottom-up' approaches in order to improve different processes in comparison to solution, in terms of kinetics, selectivity or processability. In this respect, investigation of photophysical an...

Photochemical Degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol in Aqueous Solutions by Fe2+/ Peroxydisulfate/ UV Process

Phenol and its derivatives are one of the most common contaminants in the aquatic ecosystem. Because of high toxicity of 2,4-DCP for aquatic life, resistance to biodegradation and potential for biological accumulation it is known as a priority contaminant in the aquatic environment. Advanced Oxidation Processes were successfully used for degradation of non-biodegradable contaminants that are re...

Enhanced brightness and photostability of cyanine dyes by supramolecular containment

Ultrasensitive detection and real-time monitoring of biological processes can benefit significantly from the improved brightness and photostability of the popular organic dyes such as cyanines. Here, using a model cyanine dye, Cy3, we demonstrate that brightness and photostability of the dye is significantly altered when trapped in a molecular container, e.g. cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]) and cyclod...

Nonlinear absorption microscopy.

For the past two decades, nonlinear microscopy has been developed to overcome the scattering problem in thick tissue imaging. Owing to its increased imaging depth and high spatial resolution, nonlinear microscopy becomes the first choice for imaging living tissues. The use of nonlinear optical effects not only facilitates the signal originating from an extremely small volume defined by light fo...
